United Introduces New 787 Dreamliner Livery

Airline Continues Investment to Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Though we got a sneak peek of it last month, United Airlines has formally introduced the new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) livery for its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This continues the carrier’s investment in reducing emissions of commercial air transportation.

The Dreamliner, registered N24988, took its maiden flight on October 20 in Charleston, South Carolina. It wears the phrase “the future is SAF” on its engine, representing United’s belief that “SAF is the most promising technology solution to reduce our carbon emissions and will be a critical component in meeting our climate ambitions.”

United chose to use the 787 as its outlet for SAF promotion due to its relatively low emissions. The airliner uses 20-25 percent less fuel than similar jets, producing 25 fewer emissions.

United claims to have taken advantage of SAF than any other US-based airline last year. Granted, this commitment makes up less than 0.1% of the airline’s total fuel consumption. This is partly due to the current need to blend SAF with conventional jet fuel before it can be used in flight.

The carrier has, compared to other US airlines, been somewhat of a pioneer in lowering greenhouse gas emissions. It aims to reach net zero by 2050 and has already begun using SAF at five airports in the US and Europe.

United also partnered with the San Francisco 49ers in September, purchasing enough SAF to cover the team’s game-related flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

"SAF has the potential to be a powerful tool to help reduce carbon emissions from flying, but the industry is still in its infancy, supply is limited, and most people don't know what it is," explained United CEO Scott Kirby. "We're proud to partner with like-minded organizations like the 49ers to demonstrate and elevate to a broader audience why it's important to support real solutions like SAF."

United Airlines currently has 72 Dreamliners in service. The jet serves as a replacement for its aging 757 and 767 fleet.
