Chinese Drone Completes 15-Hour Stratospheric Flight

Prototype Solar-Powered Aircraft Flew To Over 65,000 Feet

A Chinese prototype solar-powered drone recently completed a 15-hour stratospheric flight, achieving an operating altitude of 65,616 feet, according to Chinese State Media.

Janes reports that the aircraft was built by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), a subsidiary of China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics (CAAA). It has been designated the Cai Hong (CH or Rainbow) solar UAV. Local media has called the aircraft the CH-T14.

CASC officials say that the aircraft will provide services similar to a satellite, providing long-endurance 4G/5G broadband data over rural areas of the country that lack ground-based or fixed communications networks. It could also have military applications, the officials said, including persistent ISR and signals intelligence.

The aircraft's actual capabilities are currently unknown, though Janes sources say it can carry "dozens of kilograms" of payload in its current configuration.

The aircraft has a wingspan of 147 feet and is powered by eight electric motors. It has a cruising speed of 81 to 108 knots, according to the report.
