A4A, NACC Urge Roadmap for Restart of Transborder Air Travel

"Safely Reopening Transborder Air Travel Between Canada And The US Is Essential..."

Airlines for America (A4A), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, has joined with the National Airlines Council of Canada (NACC) urging the Canadian government to establish a Roadmap for the safe restart of Transborder air travel. Industry pundits have noted that Canada lags much of the world in establishing plans and timelines for a return to Transborder operations.

A document submitted to Canada by the two organizations notes that, "We believe a science and data-based approach will provide for the safe restart of Transborder air travel. The Panel report, prepared by experts in epidemiology and virology as well as advanced data analytics, calls for a variety of changes to Canadian border and travel policy including elimination of quarantine for fully vaccinated travellers, elimination of hotel quarantine for all travellers, and reduction of quarantine for partially vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers."

They add that, "Safely reopening Transborder air travel between Canada and the U.S. is essential for both nation’s economic recovery from the pandemic. Canada and the U.S. have one of the largest and most comprehensive investment relationships in the world. Air travel is a critical enabler of trade between our countries that was worth $718 billion USD in 2019, including the transport of 408,000 tons of high value-added freight and mail (1,117 tons per day). In 2019, U.S. foreign direct investment in Canada totalled a record 402 billion USD (nearly 47 percent of total foreign investment in Canada) and Canada’s foreign direct investment in the U.S. was 496 billion USD."

The respective airline organizations have asked that Canada create a plan, with their assistance that, "will clearly spell out how and when we will restart air travel between Canada and the U.S., with the objective of releasing the plan prior to June 21."
