Thornton, CO City Leaders Table Proposed Drone Ordinance

Say More Information Is Needed Before Decisions Can Be Made

The Thornton, CO city council has tabled a proposed drone ban based on testimony from members of the unmanned aviation community at a recent meeting.

The city was considering an ordinance that would have made it against the law to launch, land or control a UAV from any public street, highway, sidewalk or open space unless it was specifically designated for that purpose, according to a report from television station KCNC.

Among those arguing against the proposed law at the meeting was Lakewood, CO professional photographer Vic oss, who said that the ordinance would make things problematic for both commercial operators and hobbyists. “We’re at a danger just doing our job and when cities and counties and states start talking about making this illegal due to safety issues or privacy issues. That makes our job that much harder,” Moss told the council.

Moss said he'd be happy to work with the city to establish rules for Thornton similar to those that have been enacted in other cities. That could include a permit system that lets officials know who is operating drones in the city.

Mayor Heidi Williams said that she does not want to establish laws that would have "unintended consequences" ... and the proposal was tabled pending additional study.
