Toddler Fatally Injured In Idaho Mid-Air Collision

Child's Father Seriously Injured In Landing Accident

Two airplanes collided on landing at the Johnson Creek Airstrip (3UT) near Yellowpine, ID, Friday, resulting in the fatal injury of a toddler aboard one of the aircraft and the serious injury of his father. Two occupants of the second airplane suffered injuries that were reported to be non-life-threatening.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the two aircraft were simultaneously approaching the grass strip and were about 50 feet in the air when the airplane with the toddler on board came down on top of the second aircraft.

The accident occurred just before 10 a.m. local time. Authorities have not released the names of those involved.

FAA records indicate that the two aircraft involved were a PA-22 Tri-Pacer and a PA-28 Cherokee.

The two-year-old boy and his father were from Utah, according to the Idaho Press-tribune. The occupants of the second airplane were reportedly from Oregon. Both aircraft were arriving for a local back-country fly-in at the airport, which has a 3,400 foot grass runway that was reportedly lined on both sides by more than 70 airplanes.
