What The Hell Was THAT All About?

US Officials Investigate Aircraft Diversion

A Chicago-area man is charged with making false statements to the FBI after a Royal Air Maroc flight from New York to Casablanca, Morocco, was diverted on the pilot's authority Thursday night. The plane landed in Bangor (ME) after a passenger made an in-flight phone call to his wife.

TSA Spokeswoman Yolanda Clark said "a male passenger phoned his wife from the plane and stated he was going to blow it up."

After the Boeing 767 landed in Bangor, passenger Zubair Ali Ghias allegedly told FBI agents that he'd been kidnapped by a group of Arabs in Chicago (IL) and forced to buy his ticket to Morocco. The FBI says Ghias later admitted he'd made the whole thing up.

The aircraft was searched for explosives. None were found and the Royal Air Maroc flight (file photo of 737 in Royal Air Maroc livery, right) was allowed to continue to Casablanca on Friday.
