Airborne 04.03.19: Enhanced TBM 910, New Pipers, GEICO Skytypers

Also: Ellsworth AFB First B-21 Base, Ricci Named CEO Of Corporate Wings, Second LM-Built GPS III, iFly Adds RealPlan

Daher unveiled its 2019 edition of the TBM 910 Tuesday morning at Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, FL. In a new step designed to increase functionality for operational safety improvements on the TBM product line, the TBM 910 now has an automatic icing detection system that provides automated protection while keeping the pilot fully in the loop.

When icing or ice accretion is detected by and external sensor, and if the pilot does not take action, the system will activate deicing devices such as the airframe, windshield, propeller and the engine's particle separator. An amber CAS (Crew Alerting System) message is displayed by the avionics, advising the pilot to clear the automatic activation and revert to manual control. On the opening day at Sun 'n Fun, Piper Aircraft introduced two new variants of its venerable PA-28, the Piper Pilot 100 and Pilot 100i. The Pilot 100 series features several new components, such as the Continental Prime IO-370-D3A engine and Garmin G3X Touch in the VFR variant of the airplane. The IFR-capable Pilot 100i is upgradeable to the Garmin G3X Touch, GFC500 autopilot, and the GNX 375. The GEICO Skytypers AirShow Team is kicking off their season at Sun 'n Fun. The team's six WWII-era aircraft will perform a dynamic 18-minute, low-level precision-flying demonstration. The GEICO Skytypers fly six WWII SNJs, the Navy's equivalent of the Texas T-6. Both trainer aircraft were used to prepare pilots of "'The Greatest Generation" for combat. In 1940-41, the SNJ was built as an advanced WWII military training aircraft designed to perform all the maneuvers of a fighter plane at slower speeds. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
