AeroSports Update: Sporty’s Strives To Improve Pilot Flying Skills

Sporty’s Pilot Shop Has Joined With Prevailance Aerospace To Provide Unusual Attitude Training

Sporty’s said they are is pleased to partner with the expert former military aviators at Prevailance Aerospace for this innovative program. Designed to address leading causes of general aviation accidents while improving each pilot’s airmanship skills, this course is valuable for pilots of all experience levels.

Training takes place at the Prevailance Aerospace training facility at the Chesapeake Regional Airport (KCPK) in Chesapeake, VA utilizing the high-performance Extra 330LX. Each training course is scheduled over a two-day period. They urge you to bring your entire family to enjoy the entertainment and beauty of the Chesapeake Bay area. Travel and lodging are not included in the tuition cost.

All pilots at Prevailance have thousands of hours in a wide variety of aircraft types and models. This includes multiple aviation combat tours of duty while serving in our military with significant experience in tactical jet aviation including the F-14 tomcat and the F-18 super hornet. They are graduates from the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), and bring that professionalism to the forefront of their instruction and flying.

The unusual attitude training course provides two days of training which include two hours of ground school and two flights in their Extra 330LX

The Introduction to Unusual Attitude Training (I-UAT) program provides exposure to dynamic, edge-of-the-envelope maneuvering in a safe and controlled environment with the Extra 330LX. Pilots have the opportunity to experience flight in a way that many never have before.

The I-UAT program begins with two hours of dedicated flight academics focusing on aerodynamic principles associated with dynamic flight. Students will gain a clear understanding of the forces at work as an aircraft reaches and exceeds the normal operating envelope.

Designed to familiarize students with the advanced handling characteristics of an aerobatic aircraft, the first flight includes:

  • High angle of attack maneuvering
  • Stalls
  • Steep turns
  • Cross-controlled stalls
  • Slow flight
  • Accelerated stalls
  • Deep stalls
  • Upright spin recovery
  • Turning stalls
  • Inverted flight

The second flight focuses on improving pilot performance. Students will apply principles honed in the first training flight to achieve introductory competence in basic aerobatics. Maneuvers taught will include:

  • Aileron roll
  • Loop
  • Barrel roll
  • 1/2 Cuban eight
  • Split s
  • Hammerhead
  • Immelmann

Students will then sequence maneuvers together to better understand energy management concepts critical to dynamic flight.
