United Express Flight Lands Without Nose Gear

Hydraulic Issue Blamed, No Injuries Reported At Newark

There were some tense moments aboard United Express Flight 5124 Monday evening as it approached Newark Liberty Airport on a flight from Atlanta. The pilot reported a problem with the landing gear, an apparent hydraulic failure, and controllers were able to visually confirm the nose gear was not extended. After a go-around and delay to allow time to have the runways foamed and responders standing by, the crew made a successful emergency landing about 6:20pm.

The New York Post reports the plane was immediately sprayed down with foam, and 67 passengers and four crew members were evacuated using the emergency slides. No injuries were reported, and passengers were bussed to the terminal.

The Associated Press reports the airport was closed for about an hour. The FAA reports the Embraer 170 (similar plane pictured in file photo) slid about 200 feet on its nose before coming to a stop.
