Serious Runway Incursion At LAX

Jets Reported To Be Only 82 Feet Apart

A jet departing LAX came within 82 feet of an aircraft on a taxiway at Los Angeles International Airport Tuesday, which is less than half the separation required by FAA regulations.

The Midwest Airlines Embraer 190 had reportedly just landed following a flight from Milwaukee, and had been told by ATC to hold on the taxiway. But the pilot went about 100 feet beyond the hold line before the controller saw what was happening and told him to stop, which left him about 70 feet from an active runway.

FAA spokesman Mike Fergus told the Associated Press that, even though the Midwest airliner was not on the runway, it is considered an incursion because he had crossed the hold line.

The departing airplane, a Northwest 757, was a flight to Honolulu. The incident will be investigated by the FAA and NTSB.
