Airborne-Unmanned 09.24.19: Hidron Record, Schiebel S-100, NOAA Drones

Also: UAM Grand Challenge, Southeast Regional UAS Rodeo, New European UAS Turboprop, USMC MQ-9A

UAVOS and Stratodynamics have announced that their HiDRON stratospheric glider has completed a record-setting stratospheric flight.

Released from a Canadian Space Agency scientific gondola at an altitude of 111,434 feet, the glider performed a four hour controlled flight, eventually landing at Iroquois Falls Airport. The HiDRON was launched from the Timmins Victor M. Power Airport via the CSA scientific gondola at 10 pm on Aug. 31. The mission plan was to release the HiDRON from the gondola between an altitude of 30  kilometers altitude and the target ceiling altitude of 37 kilometers. Once released, the HiDRON was expected to follow a pre-set flight plan and land at Iroquois Falls Airport. After being chosen for test trials by the Border and Coast Guard Division of the Finnish Border Guard, Schiebel’s Camcopter S-100 VTOL UAS performed a five-day maritime surveillance demonstration aboard Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Turva. The flight trials took place at the end of August in the Gulf of Finland. Oceans Unmanned, Inc., in partnership with DARTDrones, recently trained seven NOAA ship officers and Navigation Response Team members on drone operations at the NOAA Marine Operations Center in Newport, OR. The successful two-day training included classroom instruction and hands-on flights focused on vessel-based research and mapping missions. Students practiced launch and recovery procedures, and programmed mapping missions from the deck of the NOAA Ship Hi‘ialakai while alongside the marine facility. This training is the first step to more broadly integrating drone operations for a variety of missions across the NOAA fleet. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
