Scale Model Of MakerPlane Makes First Flight

Builder Hopes To Be Able To Offer Free Plans For An LSA Fabricated Using 3-D Printing Techniques

A 1/10 scale model of the MakerPlane has been flown by Jeffrey Meyer, the company's chief aeronautical engineer.

In an undated blog post, Meyer said that the model is built to accurately scaled dimensions and using the same construction techniques that they propose to employ for the full-scale product. While he said it is not 100% accurate because some of the materials and techniques are not practical at such a small size, he feels it is an accurate representation of what the finished airplane will be.

MakerPlane ways it is an open source aviation organization which will enable people to build and fly their own safe, high quality, reasonable cost plane using advanced personal manufacturing equipment such as CNC mills and 3D printers. The projects include open source avionics software to enable state-of-the-art digital flight instruments and display capabilities, according to the website.

Basically MakerPlane says they are designing an aircraft that can be built on a computer-controlled mill at home, or at a "makerspace", which is easy to assemble and quick to build.  The plans and instructions will be available for free to anyone that wants them.

Myer said he will soon be working on a 1/4 scale model for future flight testing, as well as a full-size prototype of the airplane.
