CAF Nears Completion Of A-26 Restoration

Invader Squadron Working On "Night Mission" Since 2021

The Commemorative Air Force Invader Squadron in Fort Worth, Texas, is nearing completion of its restoration of the Douglas A-26 Invader "Night Mission" to get it ready for this year’s air show season. Much work has been done and the aircraft should be in the air again soon.

Significant progress has been made during recent weeks, with the left engine installed and props back from inspection and also reinstalled. Gear swing tests have also been successfully completed and the required 100-hour inspection nearly finished.

Karolina Marek, CAF Colonel and Invader Squadron Social Media Manager said, “We hope to fly it very soon and showcase Night Mission at numerous airshows this season. The enthusiasm is through the roof at the Invader Squadron.”

As with most CAF projects, this has been a labor of love completely driven by volunteers under the leadership of Squadron Leader Patrick Mahaffey and Maintenance Officer Steve Swift. Both are FAA certified A&P technicians and PIC-rated on the A-26, with possibly the most experience on the A-26 in the entire CAF. It is their passion and expertise that keep the historic aircraft flying and has been pivotal to the progress of the project.

The squadron has hosted ground school sessions for both new and returning members, covering the systems, operational procedures, and the history of the A-26 to ensure that crews are fully prepared when the aircraft is ready to return to flight.

Preparations for Night Mission’s return to flight include numerous engine runs and taxi tests including a high-speed taxi test were all successful and indicate the aircraft’s readiness for flight. Final steps include reattachment of the cowlings and prepping for flight clearance.
