Aerobility Announces Flying Scholarships for Disabled Persons

Application Window Open 28 April through 09 June 2023

Founded in 1993, Aerobility is a U.K. charity about the commendable mission of providing disabled individuals access to the liberating, self-affirming, independence-fostering challenge of piloting an aircraft.

Across the broad sphere of human endeavor, few undertakings instantiate freedom from restriction so powerfully as flight. This axiomatic truth is particularly well understood by Aerobility’s founders and staff, many of whom are, themselves, disabled aviators.

Through various fundraising initiatives and thoughtful management strategies, Aerobility allows disabled individuals to get behind the controls of an aircraft for a fraction of the commercial rate.

On 28 April, Aerobility announced its 2023 scholarship application window had opened and would remain so for a six-week period ending on 09 June. Awardees will receive five-hour flying scholarships which may be applied toward the attainment of pilot certification.

Aerobility 2022 scholarship recipient Andy Braybrook of Grantham, Lincolnshire stated: “The scholarship has given me something to study toward and look forward to each week, and proven that my fear of not being able to fly the plane was completely unnecessary.

Mr. Braybrook, who was paralyzed in a 2017 motorcycle accident, added: “As soon as I saw the scholarship advertised, I knew that a door was now open to me which would not have been, had I not been disabled and not known about Aerobility.”

Disabled British Army veteran Dave Evans of Newport, Gwent spoke poignantly to the subject of his Aerobility scholarship, setting forth the experience left him with feelings of  “improved self-confidence” and an “improvement in mental health.”

Aerobility CEO Mike Miller-Smith remarked: “We offer scholarships to allow anyone, with any disability, to experience the magic of flight. We know first-hand how participating in aviation changes lives and we want as many people as possible to experience that.

Mr. Miller-Smith continued: “This is only possible because of the generosity of our donors and supporters so we thank them very much indeed.”
