Rocket Lab has revealed its newest efforts refining its Electron rocket’s first stage recovery and reusability processes, during their next satellite delivery launch. After delivery of the second stage and payload towards its target, the first stage will complete a controlled descent, aided by parachutes, to a splashdown point in the ocean. On ce there, their Ocean Recovery and Capture Apparatus (ORCA) system will retrieve the rocket and store it in its cradle for inspection and return to service. Their eventual goal is to capture a returning rocket mid-flight during its descent. 

Skylab Innovation Center Seeks Students

The Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE) has announced its new Skylab Innovation Center Internship Programs, a scaffolded initiative that offers future aerospace and aviation professionals hands-on training and on-the-job experience at ACE's laboratories. A world-famous campus is a great place for interns to experience the breadth of aerospace aviation, with opportunities to touch on a variety of pathways through a STEM career. ACE describes the program as a “mission to impact a variety of people and barriers to employment.” 

Vertical Aero’s VA-X4 eVTOL Chosen

Japan Airlines (JAL) has begun its partnership for a sustainable, zero-emissions rideshare service, slated to enter service at the Osaka Kansai Expo in 2025. Working with aircraft leasing company Avolon, JAL will create Japan’s first air-based ride sharing system. Avolon will pursue local partnerships, customers, support infrastructure, and certifications to set the stage for their 2025 launch. JAL will have the option to purchase or lease up to 100 of their aircraft of choice, the Vertical VA-X4. 

Assessing PPL Training on Engine-Out on Takeoff Responses

The EAA has put together a safety analysis team to evaluate current pilot training and response when gliding to the runway. Specifically, pilot reactions to the difficult 180-degree turn back following an engine failure on takeoff. The perilous maneuver has long been known to be a cause of incidents for low-time and inexperienced pilots, but the EAA believes a study on real-world reactions could find space to improve.

Front Seat Pilot Recently Purchased The Airplane And Asked The Rear Seat Pilot To Teach Him How To Fly (It)

On October 3, 2021, at 1000 central daylight time, a Tandem Air-Bike, unregistered, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Warrensburg, Missouri. Both pilots were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight. The front seat pilot recently purchased the airplane and asked the rear seat pilot to teach him how to fly the airplane.

AD 2021-20-18 Requires Removing And Reinstalling The (Affected) Windows

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain serial-numbered Leonardo S.p.a. Model AW119 MKII helicopters. This AD was prompted by the discovery that the passenger cabin windows (windows) on a batch of helicopters were improperly installed during production. This AD requires removing and reinstalling the windows. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. This AD becomes effective November 3, 2021.
