News reports indicate that a recent Florida TFR, issued barely
24 hours before the effective period of restriction, has been
'violated' by a small aircraft. An unspecified single engine
aircraft, occupied by two people was "forced to land" Friday night.
Secret Service agents interviewd the occupants of the aircraft at
Opa Locka Airport, a GA reliever field just North of Miami.
The Kinder, Simpler, MORE Affordable Diamond Four Seater (Part
Three)
When last we left ANN's Jim Campbell and the poor guy from
Diamond Aircraft who got conned into riding along with him (now
undergoing intensive therapy that shows great promise), they were
all lined at the end of Winter Haven, FL's Runway 11, ready to
commit the unpardonable 'sin' of aviation.
And 'sin,' they did…
Aviation is populated by no small number of "personalities" --
interesting and unique people who bring their gifts to a community
they love and share of themselves in a most unreserved fashion. One
of those unique personalities was a guy by the name of Jerry
Rooks... a Florida native who circulated a simple email newsletter
about Florida aviation events and happenings, and was heavily
involved in the Southern Aviation scene...
HAI President, Roy Resavage has contacted 65 Members of Congress
including the Chairmen and Ranking Members of the House and Senate
Appropriations Committees and Aviation Subcommittees, Senate
Commerce Committee, House Transportation and Infrastructure
Committee, and the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittees of
both chambers. Resavage’s letter seeks a $10.9 million direct
appropriation for fiscal year 2005 for the FAA to field weather,
communications, and surveillance equipment in the Gulf of Mexico to
support low-level helicopter operations.
This Year's Fly-In Improved In Some Ways, But Attendance Was
Mostly Miserable
The EAA Warbirds Association makes arrangements every year to
have all their members who are coming to SNF to stay at the same
hotel in Winter Haven, home of Cypress Gardens. At one time Cypress
Gardens was -the- attraction to see in Florida. On the day SNF 2004
closed, a developer who had bought the property with local and
state government assistance was presenting his plans to try to
revive the park with a $35 million investment over the next 18
months. Winter Haven is but a few miles and a buck-fifty in
ever-present Florida tolls from Lakeland.
How're They Doing
After the rebuild and four months into the flight program, the
CarterCopter has reached a speed of 142 mph and a Mu of .62. This
is not close to the previous best (Mu = 0.87, speet 173 kt,
Altitude 10,000) but the test program is going slowly. The machine
has achieved a rate of climb of 750 fpm at 4,000 lb (as a standard
for comparison, most gyroplanes weigh a few hundred pounds, with
only such heavyweights as the RAF 2000 and AAI Sparrowhawk breaking
1,000). This rate of climb figure was with the gear down.
A totally interactive flight experience for young people, unlike
any other in Wisconsin or the Midwest, will open to the public on
May 15, as the EAA AirVenture Museum unveils its new "KidVenture
Gallery" at its facility in Oshkosh.
AVEMCO recently announced acceptance of the new King Schools
Practical Risk Management for Weather course as an approved
training course in AVEMCO's Safety Rewards Program. The course will
be available for purchase in early May.
In the summer of 2003, AVEMCO launched the Safety Rewards Program
initiative to take an active role in reducing the frequency and
severity of accidents in the General Aviation community.
Can a kit aircraft builder come back from the brink of
oblivion?
In July 2003, Express Aircraft LLC had to answer the question
after the disastrous loss of co-founder, owner and President Larry
Olson in an accident. It was the worst kind of accident for a kit
airplane company: the key man was killed, an important prototype
was destroyed, and it all happened in the days before the sport's
most visible trade show, EAA Airventure at Oshkosh.
Yet, at this Spring's S-n-F, Express had a large presence with two
aircraft in the booth, new owners, key personnel on hand, and
looking for all intents like a seamless continuation of he old
company - because it was.
On my last run around the S-n-F grounds, using my last minutes
of the show to say goodbye for now to friends and glean any
last-minute information, I got an object lesson in using every
minute.
At the very end of the airshow, on the last full day, the New Kolb
Aircraft Company sold their patriotic-themed Firestar demo plane.
They were happy, they got a good price, and a new customer. The
customer also got a good buy, in my humble opinion.
Omar Contreras is one of those guys you just like the instant
you see him. Full of fun, energy and humour, Omar could put a grin
on the face of the crotchety old guy - you know, the one that had
that all the kids in the neighbourhood terrified.
Omar was last seen flying a trike on the Blue Expedition which took
him around the Caribbean and to a number of US states in 2002. (See
www.bluexpedition.com
for information in Spanish or English). So when he showed up at
Sun-n-Fun this year, he had to be up to something interesting - and
you had to ask him what it was pretty quickly before he bounced off
in a new direction.
Uses Same Form Factor As EFIS And Can Back It Up If EFIS
Fails
Avionics manufacturer Dynon Avionics has announced a new product
at S-n-F 2004, an engine monitor that uses the same form factor and
display as their EFIS product.
Several parts of a historic XC-99 aircraft located at the Kelly
Annex to Lackland AFB were hauled to the Air Force Museum near
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, recently. A C-5 Galaxy from
the 433rd Airlift Wing here hauled the initial load of the
three-phase dismantling project.
Disassembling began Jan. 20 by a company with a history of
disassembling and reassembling large aircraft.
Homebuilt Camping is always great fun to visit; you are
guaranteed to meet interesting people and see, and hear about,
their interesting planes. While like types (in both senses of the
word) often cluster together, it's also possible to find some
interesting juxtapositions. I thought that this was one of
those.
The month of April begins with mischief, innocent white lies and
laughter; however, when two service members stationed aboard Marine
Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, returned home aboard Korean
Airlines Flight 7865, no comedy was involved.
Roughly three hours into their eight-hour return trip to Hawaii, a
57-year-old man began to show signs of uneasy breathing. After the
man notified a flight attendant of his difficulty breathing, she
responded by administering him with oxygen.
The homebuilding community has a sense of humor, clearly
including these two kids - and the builder of this colorful RANS
homebuilt, whose work these kids are admiring.
A close-up shows what the kids are admiring. They must be Warner
Brothers fans. Actually lots of somebodies are WB toon fans.
But… what's that naughty Tweety Bird up to? I tought I
taw…
Why is the TSA unable to get employees to enforce simple rules
consistently?
On my way back home after S-N-F 2004 ended, I experienced a
situation at Orlando International Airport that made me realize,
with utter clarity, why it is that terrorists will once again find
a way to attack us deep inside our borders. It is not a question of
"if," but rather a question of "when." When it happens, we will
only have ourselves to blame for it.
