Amazing Technology Now Being Fielded Worldwide

There is a scene in every Bond movie where the star must collect his latest apparatus from Q, so clich�d a scene that Mike Myers sent it up lovingly in Wayne's World. Most of us will never take up the mantle of Sean Connery. The nearest we can get to starring in that scene is to visit the Environmental Tectonics Corporation's Somersworth, Pennsylvania (suburban Philadelphia) headquarters.

The FAA has reportedly solved "internal logistical problems" at the Los Angeles International (LAX) tower and, beginning at 1600 local on December 2 (0000Z, December 3), will make the VFR transition "mini route" across the east end of LAX available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Harry Stonecipher is stepping up as Phil Condit's in the top spot at Boeing. He says his first job will be to restore the Defense Department's faith in his company. That may not be easy. Boeing is being shadowed these days by at least three scandals involving its defense business. One centers on the recent procurement of a $16 billion contract to sell the Air Force modified 767s as air tankers. Boeing's CFO and a former Air Force official who went to work for the company have been fired as the investigation continues.

Cessna Aircraft Company presented the keys of five new 182T Skylanes to the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) during a ceremony conducted in Independence, Kansas, on November 18, 2003. The CAP placed their order earlier in 2003 for a total of 21 Skylanes and will take delivery of 15 of their new Cessnas in 2003, and the remaining six in early 2004.

Phil Condit had a vision back in 1996. He believed the future of Boeing, which he'd just been tapped to lead as president and CEO, was not in commercial aviation, but in defense contracting. Condit surprised the aerospace world Monday by resigning, leaving his post to former Vice Chairman Harry Stonecipher.

Condit says he wasn't forced out. Still, Boeing has been under the microscope for alleged unethical behavior surrounding its procurement of a Pentagon contract for its new generation of rocket systems. Even though the ordeal is almost seven years behind Boeing, it still haunts the aerospace giant.

GAMA: 'Aerospace Commission Recommendations Generate Change'

"The Final Report of the Commission on the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry, issued one year ago, is fundamentally changing the way the federal government develops solutions for aerospace," said Commissioner Ed Bolen (right), President and CEO of GAMA.

Australian flagship carrier Qantas says its new low cost domestic airline will be called Jetstar. Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon, said the airline would use new Airbus A320 aircraft from June next year and would eventually have an all-A320 fleet. "Jetstar will fly new A320 aircraft featuring 177 leather seats and an inflight audio entertainment system," Dixon said.

A strike fighter aircraft from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, flying from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) in the North Arabian Gulf, attacked enemy troops engaging coalition forces with mortar fire near Baqubah, Iraq, Nov. 28, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

ALPA: Northwest Airlink Pilots Open Strike Operations Center

After Mesaba Airlines management publicly indicated that a strike deadline would likely be necessary to pressure contract talks into closure, Mesaba Airlines pilots opened a strike operations center today in Minneapolis. A strike would impact 600 daily departures for Northwest Airlines.

Lockheed Martin has awarded CAE USA a contract valued at US$7.7 million to perform upgrades on U.S. Air Force C-130E/H simulators. CAE will upgrade the motion and aural cue systems on eight simulators located at Little Rock Air Force Base (AFB), Pope AFB, McChord AFB, Dyess AFB, and the Minneapolis Air National Guard Base.

A REALLY BIG Bird Comes Together. The nose section of the first A380 has been completed at Airbus’ Méaulte plant and delivered to Airbus Saint-Nazaire. A ceremony in Méaulte, France, was attended by French Minister of Equipment, Transport, Housing, Tourism and the Sea, Gilles de Robien, and by many personalities from the region, Airbus representatives and all the Airbus Méaulte personnel.

Teamsters Local 100 members with Astar Air Cargo ratified their second contract by a five-to-one margin on Friday. "The dedication of these workers was evident by the voting results," said Ron Bowman, President of Local 100 based in Cincinnati, Ohio.
