Charter Plane Carrying Brazilian Soccer Team Down In Columbia

At Least 75 Fatally Injured, Six Survived

A chartered Avro RJ85 carrying the Brazilian soccer team to Medellin, Colombia went down Tuesday morning in a mountainous region near Rionegro, Colombia resulting in the fatal injury of at least 75 of the 81 people on board.

The aircraft had departed Monday night from Santa Cruz, Bolivia. CNN reports that the crew of the airplane declared an emergency somewhere between the municipalities of La Ceja and lan Union, according to Colombian aviation officials. It went down in an area known as Cerro El Gordo near Medellin.

There were reportedly showers and thunderstorms in the region, but no major thunderstorms were in the area, according to CNN meteorologist Michael Guy. But there would likely have been turbulence in the region because of the mountainous terrain.

The team was scheduled to play in the first round of the South American Cup finals Wednesday.
