Airborne 09.09.20: Jetpacks at LAX?, XP-82 Twin Mustang, Canada Mask Fines

Also: Erickson Takes Bell 214 Series, RC Fest 2020 Cancelled, Embraer Cuts, Coast Guard Rescues Pilot

The recent reports by two airline pilots in LAX airspace of a man flying a jetpack at 3000 feet are not technically feasible, at this point, says Jetpack Aviation's David Mayman... an experienced jetpack pilot and innovator.

For the record, David is stuck in Australia, in quarantine, so this is not an attempt to evade responsibility, as he was thousands of miles away and all his jetpacks and pilots are otherwise accounted for... Our recent discussions with David suggest him to be a straight shooter. "The technology is just not there yet," he noted. One of the most extraordinary people in aviation, is rarely heard of in non-warbird circles. His name is Tom Reilly. I watched Tom, when he was based nearby in Kissimmee, work on all manner of aircraft, and flew on quite a few of those he rebuilt, including a magnificent B-24 that we flew surrounded by other warbirds, in the middle of a warbird event that had me absolutely entranced with the imagery of it all... especially when my imagination allowed time to dream it was all the real thing (war-time) for a minute or two. So... it was no surprise to us that he took on the super-extraordinary project of rebuilding the XP 82 from a pile of junk... and its now on sale for $12 Million. Transport Canada opines that Canadians have the right to feel safe while flying during a global pandemic, which is why they mandated a number of health precautions to keep travelers safe. As a result of some investigations, Transport Canada has issued the first fines in Canada for contravening the Interim Order to Prevent Certain Persons from Boarding Flights in Canada due to COVID-19. Two individuals have been fined $1,000 each for refusing to follow the direction from the air crew to wear their face coverings. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
