Delta To Add Three Dollar Surcharge To European Flights

Fee Imposed To Cover Airline's Costs Under The EU-ETS

Delta will begin charging an additional three dollars on tickets purchased for flights to Europe to cover the cost of its compliance with the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme.

Delta is reportedly the first major U.S. carrier to announce a fee in response to the scheme.

Reuters reports that the surcharge was tacked on to the ticket price on January 2nd. The EU's cap-and-trade scheme went into effect New Year's Day. A spokesperson, however, would not say whether it was a direct result of the implementation of the scheme.

When one airline raises prices, most others usually quickly follow suit. The EU had long suggested that airlines pass the cost of purchasing emissions credits on to their customers. Lufthansa earlier this week became the first European airline to announce that it would be charging its customers an additional fee because of the plan.
