Pilot Safe Following Harrier Crash Near MCAS Yuma

Marine Corps Jet Was On Training Mission

The pilot of a US Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier attack jet was able to walk into the hospital unassisted after ejecting Wednesday from his stricken plane near Yuma, AZ.

The Associated Press reports the unarmed aircraft was on a training mission over the Barry M. Goldwater Range when it crashed. The training area is located about 50 miles east of Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, the world's busiest Marine air base.

MCAS Yuma spokesman Sgt. Robert Smith had no details on why the Harrier went down, or whether the pilot, whose identity was not released, suffered any injuries.

Pilots are often examined by doctors as a precautionary measure after they eject, Smith added.

NOTAM 7/5437 is in effect over the accident site, while investigators examine the wreckage.
