AD: ATR-GIE Avions de Transport Régional Airplanes

AD NUMBER: 2018-25-18

PRODUCT: all ATR-GIE Avions de Transport Régional Model ATR42 and ATR72 airplanes.

ACTION: Final Rule.

SUMMARY: This AD was prompted by reports of cracking in main landing gear (MLG) universal joints (U-joints).

This AD requires repetitive detailed inspections of the affected U-joints for cracks, and replacement if necessary.

This AD also provides an optional terminating action for the repetitive inspections.

DATES: This AD is effective January 22, 2019.

COST: The FAA estimates that this AD affects 62 airplanes of U.S. registry. Operators may incur the following costs in order to comply with this AD:

Inspection: 1 work-hour × $85 per hour = $85 per airplane per inspection cycle.
Replacement (if necessary): 8 work-hours × $85 per hour = $680 per airplane. Parts - $14,083. Total cost per airplane - $14,763.
