Airborne 01.18.19: Pipistrel Adventurer, Airlander 10, Iridium NEXT

Also: Canadian Filmmaker Opposed to New Regs, EMAS Technology, BRS Aerospace, VSE Aviation Acquires 1st Choice

One hundred years ago, in 1919, saw the first successful flight from England to Australia.

The Great Air Race (GAR) for 2019 presents a unique and major opportunity to commemorate the centenary of that historic event. Capitalizing on a concept initially proposed by a well–known Australian aviator and adventurer Dick Smith AC, the 2019 Centenary Great Air Race will be targeting innovative, new aviation technologies with the lowest environmental impact. This concept will push the boundaries of current aviation technology, and the resources and the expertise that is required to design and fly such an aircraft on this 18,000 nautical mile adventure. Several Pipistrel dealers have entered the GAR, flying a new model specifically fine-tuned for this competition. The new Pipistrel “Adventurer” aircraft was developed as a limited edition model purposely designed for events like the GAR. As of December, 2018, there had been 20 entries from the UK, Europe, USA, Canada and Australia. Hybrid Air Vehicles will not be rebuilding the prototype Airlander 10 airship after six flights and two incidents. The 302-foot long aircraft was slightly damaged in 2016 on its second flight when it bumped into the ground during a landing attempt. In 2017, the hull of the prototype automatically deflated (as designed) when it came loose from its moorings, sending a female employee of the company to the hospital. The damage was considered "very significant" and HAV's insurer agreed to pay about $26 million, which was well below the $41 million HAV told its shareholders was the "maximum insured value" of the aircraft. The last batch of Iridium NEXT satellites has been successfully launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. With this successful eighth launch, the Iridium NEXT fleet is now fully deployed to low earth orbit. The operational constellation comprises 66 satellites, at an altitude of about 485 miles, organized in six orbital planes, each containing 11 satellites, plus nine spare satellites in a parking orbit and six more ground spares. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
