Aero-TV: Junior Aces Inside The Youth Pavilion At SUN ‘n FUN

Levi Zima Works With Youth Building Basic Radio Kits

Levi Zima is a volunteer with Junior Aces working with kids in the Youth Pavilion inspiring the next generation by building basic AM radio kits, essentially just an AM receiver. It teaches the kids basic electronics and how to solder, which is a skill with widespread use in the industry and college.

It also teaches kids how radio and wireless work on a very basic level. Beyond that, it also gives kids the opportunity to get on the airport and hear communications between the tower and aircraft.

Levi helped design the kits that are brought in, and the kids get to take them home when they’re done.

The kids coming in represent a broad age range and mix, with kids as young as 3 or 4 years old. And Levi also pointed out that one of the most rewarding things for him is to see kids not being stuck on their cell phones but focusing on learning. He mentioned one kid whose brother was on his phone and trying to distract him but he told his brother, “No, I want to focus on soldering this radio.”

He said it was a really heartwarming experience to see some of the kids just let go of their phones and working with their hands and learning about electronics.

Anyone who wants to get involved as a volunteer should contact Sun ‘N Fun and mention volunteering with Junior Aces.
Junior Aces will also be at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, and those interested in becoming volunteers can contact kidventure@Oshkosh.
