Airbus A350XWB Aborts Its Own Takeoff With Media On Board

Was To Have Been First Flight Of The New Airliner From The U.S.

A chartered Airbus A350XWB  loaded with journalists and Qatar Airways staff was supposed to fly for about 12 hours from JFK Airport in New York to Hamad International Airport.

But instead, the plane didn't make it off the ground. An onboard computer determined that JFK's 11,000-foot runway was not long enough for the airplane to safely get off the ground, and stood on the brakes.

Yahoo News reports that one journalist, The Points Guy Editor in Chief Zach Honig, said that the takeoff was aborted about 18 seconds after the plane began accelerating down the runway. Stopping the airplane reportedly took another 15 seconds.

And it's not like the plane was heavily loaded. The U.K. newspaper The Telegraph reports that there were only 36 people on board the airplane for the flight.

No one was hurt in the incident. The flight was reportedly delayed by about two hours, at which point it departed normally and flew on to Doha.

Qatar Airways plans to begin service from the U.S. with the A350XWB on January 1, 2016.
