AMA Drone Report 03.26.20: Remote ID RFI, UAV Dodgeball, UAS Reg Extended

The FAA has posted a Request for Information (RFI) seeking input from the manned aviation community regarding whether and/or how they can potentially receive and use UAS remote ID information to further enhance safety, by reducing collision risks at lower altitudes.

The FAA says the posting is not an RFP. Drones can do many things, but avoiding obstacles is not their strongest suit yet – especially when they move quickly. Although many flying robots are equipped with cameras that can detect obstacles, it typically takes from 20 to 40 milliseconds for the drone to process the image and react. It may seem quick, but it is not enough to avoid a bird or another drone, or even a static obstacle when the drone itself is flying at high speed. This can be a problem when drones are used in unpredictable environments. In order to solve this problem, researchers at the University of Zurich have equipped a quadcopter with special cameras and algorithms that reduced its reaction time down to a few milliseconds – enough to avoid a ball thrown at it from a short distance. With all the craziness we have to bear these days, there is a little temporary relief for those of you in need of a UAS Registration renewal. On March 13, 2020 you may have received an email from the FAA about extending your UAS registration. What does this mean for AMA members? For most members, your FAA registration expiration date has been extended to December 12, 2020. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of AMA Drone Report!!!
