Aero-TV: Vision Products LLC Introduces PilotVision Monocular HUD

The Well-Appointed Eye in the Sky

Established in 2009 as the Vision Products Division of SA Photonics Inc. and spun-off as an independent business entity in 2021, Vision Products LLC is a privately held concern specializing in the development and deployment of augmented and virtual reality systems, night-vision products, and human-machine interfaces. The company’s helmet-mounted, monocular and binocular displays aid military, police, and civilian pilots, as well as warfighters and personnel engaged in Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) actions by providing data overlays conducive to aircraft operations, target acquisition, and virtual reality simulations.

Of particular interest to commercial and general aviation pilots is Vision Products’ PilotVision augmented reality head-mounted display. The device—which comprises an articulating bracket terminating in a transparent, monocular, Heads Up Display (HUD)—clips to a standard aviation headset and provides aviators enhanced situational awareness via high-brightness symbology superimposed over a 62° field of view with negligible peripheral obscuration. When not needed, the eyepiece can be rotated upward to its stow position—after the fashion of a boom microphone.

PilotVision’s high-resolution, see-through prism eyepiece provides pilots overlays depicting ground speed, aircraft attitude, altitude, terrain information, and GPS data. The system utilizes iFly GPS, an electronic flight bag that provides navigation and flight-planning capabilities while retaining a high degree of compatibility with extant AHRS and ADS-B Traffic & Weather devices.

To the questions of power-supply and processor type and capacity, PilotVision features a self-contained, fully-ruggedized control unit with battery power, driver electronics, and an integrated Samsung S8 smartphone. The control unit is designed to interface with a standard attitude and heading reference system (AHRS), and requires no hard connection to a host aircraft’s electrical or avionics systems. Ergo, the unit can be installed, activated, and employed with alacrity.

A vetted and reputable U.S. military contractor, Vision Products’ head-mounted displays are counted among the world’s most robust, reliable, and conducive to extremely challenging environments.
