Airborne 12.03.14: Final 787 Battery Report, Paraplegic Pilot, TSA Security Mess

An NTSB report on the Boeing 787 fire of a lithium-ion battery that occurred in January of 2013 has been issued.

At that time, ground workers discovered smoke and flames coming from an auxiliary power unit lithium-ion battery in a Japan Airlines 787 that was parked at the gate at Boston Logan International Airport. The NTSB said that the fire began after one of the battery’s eight cells experienced an internal short circuit leading to thermal runaway of the cell, which propagated into full battery thermal runaway. Healing can be more that physical, and in this case, Scott Miller looked to aviation for inspiration. Several years ago an accident caused Miller to lose the use of his legs, but not his drive. Late in 2012, he started flight training at Indian Hill Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, and last week, he passed his private pilot checkride. If you flew on a commercial airliner over the Thanksgiving holiday, and did not have to depart from Midway Airport in Chicago, you missed standing in a TSA security line that was measured at over a mile long last Sunday morning. All this... and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
