Blue Origin has made its 10th successful test flight with its New Shepard rocket, launching multiple payloads, including eight NASA experiments, to an altitude of 66 miles on Wednesday. The rocket lifted off at the company's West Texas launch complex at 10:05 a.m. local time. The flight l
asted 10 minutes and 15 seconds, and the New Shepard touched down on its landing pad as designed. The capsule returned to Earth under a parachute, landing on the Texas plains. The FAA recently proposed an AD for multiple Piper models after receiving a report of a fatigue crack found in the lower main wing spar cap on a Piper Model PA-28R-201 airplane. An investigation revealed that repeated high-load operating conditions accelerated the fatigue crack growth in the lower main wing spar cap. In addition, because of the structural configuration of the wing assembly, the cracked area was inaccessible for a visual inspection. The FAA said that the condition, if not addressed, could result in the wing separating from the fuselage in flight. The estimated cost to replace the wing spar, if necessary, is estimated to be $8,260 for parts and labor. The partial government shutdown is forcing a delay in NTSB investigations into accidents, including 10 involving airplanes. Some 366 of the NTSB's 397 employees are
currently furloughed due to the partial government shutdown. That means that the board is unable to send investigators to accident scenes. As of late last week, there were 14 accidents that are waiting for investigations to begin, with 10 of those involving aircraft. The report indicates that 25 people have been fatally injured in those accidents, but did not stipulate which of those were from the aviation accidents.
