EarthX Batteries Approved for Cessna 172, Aviat Pitts

12V Lithium Batteries Provide Impressive Weight and Life Span Savings

Colorado-based lithium battery manufacturer EarthX is now offering its 12V and 24V FAA TSO-certified batteries to the general aviation market. The 12V model was even recently granted an STC for several Cessna 172 and Aviat Pitts aircraft.

The new 24V offerings, the ETX400-24-TSO and ETX1200-24-TSO, provide lighter-weight, high-performance alternatives to traditional lead-acid batteries, while meeting the FAA’s long list of safety and performance standards. Both batteries meet FAA TSO-C179b and have been tested to DO-311A and DO-160G environmental and electrical standards.

The ETX400-24-TSO is a 7.8 amp-hour backup battery designed to power essential avionics systems during an electrical system failure. Weighing just 5.4 pounds, this battery is suited for aircraft needing a compact and dependable emergency power source to keep navigation, communication, and display systems functioning when primary power is lost. The battery features a built-in battery management system (BMS) for protection, reliability, and health monitoring.

The second new model, the ETX1200-24-TSO, is a starting battery targeted at aircraft with turboprop, turbine, or large piston engines. With a capacity of 19.4 amp-hours and 1200 peak cranking amps, the ETX1200-24-TSO delivers high starting performance in a compact 12.4-pound package. Like the ETX400, it features an integrated BMS and EarthX’s fault light technology to alert pilots to potential battery issues before they become a problem.

In addition to the new 24V models, EarthX has received STC approval for its 12V TSO lithium battery for use in several aircraft models. These include the Aviat Pitts S-1S, S-1T, S-2, S-2A, S-2B, and S-2C, as well as Cessna 172 A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N variants.

The 12V lithium batteries provide several advantages over many lead-acid types. Though a weight cut is the most obvious benefit, EarthX claims that they also provide nearly double the cold cranking power and life span of a conventional one. They are also more resistant to freezing, boiling, and corrosion.
