B-29 Doc Adds Tampa Bay Airfest And Sarasota To Its March Schedule

One Of 1,644 B-29 Superfortress Aircraft Built By The Boeing Company In Wichita

The B-29 Doc History Restored Tour will land in Sarasota and Tampa Bay, FL, in  March. B-29 Doc will be a participant in the 2024 Tampa Bay AirFest at MacDill Air Force Base, March 29 and 30, and will host ride flight opportunities in Sarasota prior to the air show.

B-29 Doc is one of 1,644 B-29 Superfortress aircraft built by the Boeing Company in Wichita during World War II and one of only two B-29 bombers still airworthy and flying today.

“The connection between MacDill Air Force Base and the B-29 Superfortress dates back to post-World War II when MacDill served as a B-29 training base for the U.S. Strategic Air Command,” said Lt. Col. John Williams, MacDill AirFest air show director. “Having B-29 Doc join us for this year’s air show provides a unique opportunity for air show attendees to get a one-of-a-kind look at the historic legacy of MacDill’s past while showcasing the present-day mission of the base.”

The B-29 training mission at MacDill Air Force Base began in January of 1945 and continued through 1953 with training activities focused around the B-29, along with the P-51 Mustang.

“Connecting the story of our military’s present-day mission with the legacy of past missions is certainly unique,” said Josh Wells, B-29 Doc executive director. “When you climb inside a B-29 and get up-close and personal access to historic aircraft it ensures legacies of those who have served to protect freedom for decades are not forgotten.”

In addition to appearing at the Tampa Bay AirFest, B-29 Doc will host ride flight opportunities before the air show in Sarasota, FL, March 26 and 27. Aircraft access in Sarasota will only be available for B-29 Doc Flight Experience passengers. Ground and cockpit tours will be available for attendees at Tampa Bay AirFest.
