"Following the accident of Columbia, it was obvious they had to replace the shuttle. That's where all of NASA's energies are going and beyond that to the Moon and Mars. One feels instinctively that it's on the road to nowhere much at all."

Source: George Fraser, the director of the space research centre at the University of Leicester in Britain, commenting on NASA's proposal to trim its International Space Station operating budget by $344 million. Several programs -- including many of interest to European partners in the station -- would be delayed or cancelled outright if such measures are adopted.
