SARS, Safety Hit China Southern

May's SARS fallout has hit home -- China Southern Airlines' RPMs for that month were down 82.9%, compared to the not-so-great same month, a year earlier.

Looking at one of the reputed hubs of SARS, Hong Kong, tells even more of the story: traffic to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was down 90.7%. International travel overall was down nearly 85%.

Even the airline's cargo traffic hit the cumulus granite: revenue-ton-miles were awful, compared to May, 2002 -- the airline experienced a drop of 2/3 of its overall cargo. Most of that cargo drop was in the China markets, however; international cargo was down not quite a third.
