CAF Airbase Georgia Presents Aviation Historian Stephen Chapis

To Discuss ‘Poor Little Lambs: The Baa Baa Black Sheep’ Story

The Commemorative Air Force’s Airbase Georgia announced it will be hosting a special presentation by aviation historian Stephen Chapis, who will discuss his new book, “Poor Little Lambs: The Baa Baa Black Sheep Story,” a long-awaited chronicle of the 1970s hit television series on NBC that celebrated World War II aviators and sparked a passion for vintage military aviation in an entire generation.

The live presentation furthers Airbase Georgia’s mission to preserve and continue sharing the legacy of the Greatest Generation and those who fought in the Pacific air war.

The book took Chapis 15 years of research, interviews, collecting photos, newspaper clippings, and personal anecdotes to put together the most comprehensive account of the show that introduced millions to the rugged and durable Vought F4U Corsair.

Its gull-wing design and distinctive whistle during high-speed dives endeared it to many who came to love the airplane that at the same time stoked fear into the hearts of Japanese troops who nicknamed it “Whistling Death.”

Event Details:

  • Date: Saturday, December 13, 2025
  • Time: 10:00 a.m.
  • Location: CAF Airbase Georgia Museum, Atlanta Regional Airport – Falcon Field, Peachtree City, Ga.
  • Tickets: $10.00 – available on the website or at the door

Chapis will share with the audience:

  • Personal anecdotes from interviews with the cast and crew
  • Rare behind-the-scenes film clips and photos
  • Reflections and insights from his nearly 20-year journey of research

The show’s storytelling and technical realism brought a new generation to appreciate the heroism of Marine aviators and the aircraft that took them to victory. Airbase Georgia leader Joel Perkins said, “Baa Baa Black Sheep wasn’t just television entertainment, it reignited public fascination with World War II aviation at a time when warbirds were disappearing from the skies. By celebrating the Corsair and the real pilots behind it, the series helped ensure that the stories of the Pacific war continued to inspire future generations.”
