Tampa Runway Closed Due To Magnetic Pole Shift

Main Runway At Tampa International Out Of Service Until Mid-Week

A slight shift in the Earth's magnetic north pole towards Russia has caused officials to close the primary runway at Tampa International Airport until January 13th.

The FAA told Fox News that the taxiway signs are being changed to more accurately reflect the runway's orientation to magnetic north. FAA spokesman Paul Takemoto told Fox that adjusting a runway is rare, even though the planet's magnetic poles move a few degrees each year.

Takemoto said there would be no effect on the safety of passengers flying into or out of the airport. The FAA said the new primary runway designation at KTPA will be 19R/1L, a change from 18R/36L. The airport's east-west runways will be closed later this month for a similar adjustment, according to the FAA.

Tampa's Peter O. Knight airport also saw its runway designations change. The FAA did not say if other airports would require the change.
