Duck! Mail Falls From Plane

And Watch For Falling Fish, Too

You may feel you're bombarded by junk mail whenever you open your mailbox -- or turn on your computer (except for Propwash, of course) -- but citizens in the Marshall Islands were literally bombarded with air mail Wednesday, when a cargo door popped open on an Asia Pacific Airlines plane as it was taking off from Majuro airport.

As the 727 banked to the south, said airport manager Art Coburn, a trail of mail began to float out the door, and onto startled residents below -- prompting the tower to tell the crew to bank in the opposite direction. (To paraphrase the Marx Brothers: If mail falls out of your plane when you do this... don't do it.)

The mail was from Hawaii and Guam, according Radio New Zealand International. Some, but not all, of the mail was recovered.

It could have been worse: the jet was also carrying tuna destined for Japan to be made into sashimi. That would have been messy... and not pleasant to the olfactory senses, either.
