Traffic Plane Causes Traffic Jam

Cessna 150 Makes An Emergency Landing On The NJ Turnpike During Rush Hour

A Cessna 150 piloted by Frank Vogt was conducting its usual series of traffic reports for the Metro Networks traffic service when Vogt noticed his engine running rough and a drop in oil pressure.

The CFI's training kicked in, and Vogt made a successful emergency landing on the New Jersey Turnpike at rush hour, causing some of the traffic problems he was normally there to report.

Multiple media sources including television station WCBS in New York report that Vogt knew he would not make it back to Philadelphia, where he is based, so he chose the best alternative he could for the emergency landing. "Instincts take over," he said. "You just kind of have to just look for a place to land and stuff. I was like, 'nah, I'm gonna land on the New Jersey Turnpike,' and at that point I decided that's where I'm going."

The aircraft was towed off the highway. The FAA and NTSB will inspect the aircraft in an attempt to determine what caused the loss of oil pressure which forced the emergency landing. Both Vogt and the traffic reporter riding with him were unharmed.
