Scottish Authorities Probing Sikorsky Gearboxes In North Sea Operations

U.S. Engineers Sent To Assist In The Investigation

After 17 oil rig workers were lost in March in an accident involving a Sikorsky S-92 in Canada, a quarter of the fleet of S-92's that ferry workers to and from North Sea oil rigs has been found to have cracks in their gearboxes, sparking an emergency investigation.

The Canadian accident was traced to a different gearbox issue.

The cracks were first noticed during an inspection of an S-92 last week, according to The Daily Record of Scotland.

Engineers from Sikorsky have been sent from the U.S. to help in the investigation. Jake Molloy, a spokesman for RMT, Great Britain's largest transport union, said it was unclear why the defects seemed to be limited to helos working the North Sea rigs. "The problem seems to be unique to the North Sea," he said. "whether it's because of the harsh conditions, we don't know."
