Neither Rain, Nor Hail... But IFR, Maybe

Air Mail... By A Whole 'Other Definition

Last year was a tough one for the US Postal Service. With the nation's largest fleet of over a quarter-million vehicles, those weeks of 4-dollar gasoline generated losses in the billions.

One of the budget cuts the service considered to save money was elminating the contract for delivery of mail by air in a rugged, remote area along the Salmon River in Idaho.

The New York Times reports that 72-year-old Ray Arnold has been delivering mail there for 34 years, landing his Cessna 185 in tight spots to deliver mail, medicine, and even flowers and cookies sent from neighbor to neighbor.

After an outcry from residents of the rocky canyons, the postal service relented, but there are signs Ray Arnold's contract might not pay its customary 46-thousand dollars per year much longer.

Still, don't sell Ray's negotiating and diplomacy skills short. His office manager at Arnold Aviation is Carol Arnold... his ex-wife. A guy who can make that arrangement work is not to be underestimated.
