Three Safe Following DA42 Takeoff Accident

Plane Failed To Leave Ground

An adult and two teenagers are safe after their Diamond DA42 Twin Star crashed on takeoff Tuesday in West Cornwall, England. According to the BBC, the aircraft was departing Land's End Airport bound for Essex when it ran off the runway, impacted a hedge and flipped over.

Witnesses told investigators the plane lost power while attempting to takeoff. Rescue crews had to cut an opening for the three people onboard to escape the plane (the DA42's forward seats are accessed by a forward-opening canopy, with a left-side door for rear seat passengers -- Ed.)

Fortunately, no one onboard was seriously injured in the accident. Officials described them as "walking wounded."

"The casualties were taken off suffering from shock, obviously, from a very traumatic event," said Cornwall Fire Brigade incident commander Stuart Whitworth.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch will investigate the accident. The Twin Star is powered by dual Thielert Centurion diesel engines.
