Soaring Competition Set For Adrian, MI

Will Include A Juniors Contest And Development Camp

The Sandhill Soaring Club and Adrian Soaring Club have teamed up with the Soaring Society of America (SSA) to host the 2018 U.S. Juniors Contest and Development Camp and concurrent Region 6 North Sports and Club Class contests at Lenawee County Airport (KADG), in Adrian, Michigan July 1-7.

R6N will be augmented by a camp that includes a morning lecture series and flight trace analysis sessions. R6N has been designed to be both a Rookie Camp for non-juniors and a warm-up to Nationals and an opportunity for former U.S. Junior Team members, experienced Sports and Club Class pilots and the young-at-heart to mix with and coach new racing pilots.

Region 6 and nearby Region 7 Chicagoland and Ontario based pilots are invited to the event.

Lenawee Co. Airport (KADG), located in Adrian, MI, once set the standard for modern National sailplane racing competitions. The event revives a contest site that once held several National Championships ('65, '74, and '79) and was home to National Champions Richard Schreder, A.J. Smith, Rudy Mozer, Eric Mozer, and Ken Sorenson.

The Daily Telegram newspaper reports that, according to a news release, about 30 pilots as young as 16 are expected to compete. Pilots will race around a course determined by the contest director and meteorologists. The pilot who flies the fastest and generally the furthest will be named the winner for the day. The winner will be awarded 1,000 points per day, and the pilot who accumulates the most points over the seven-day event will be declared the overall winner.
