Database Access and Download Capabilities Enhanced
The National Transportation Safety Board has updated its Case Analysis and Reporting Online (CAROL) database. Subject database allows users to search for and examine data germane to investigations and recommendations across the entirety of the agency’s purview.

CAROL now includes an expanded aviation dataset for information pertaining to investigations from 1962 to present.
Users will note a new landing page for CAROL that includes links to all search pages. The Simple Search and Advanced Search options have been renamed Basic Investigation and Recommendation Search and Custom Search Builder, respectively. Custom Search Builder allows users to build a search for investigations or recommendations using any parameters available in the database.
The NTSB also relaunched the Aviation Query page, now called Aviation Investigation Search, on NTSB.gov. The relaunched page allows users to search all aviation investigations and includes expanded download capabilities for Comma Separated Values (CSV)—widely used for tabular data and often associated to spreadsheet applications like Excel—and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) downloads— the de facto computer format readable by humans to store structured data. Downloads in both formats now include hyperlinks to applicable dockets and reports.

The aforementioned updates are based directly on user feedback. The NTSB continues to welcome input and comments vis-à-vis CAROL and search functionalities. Users may submit feedback to SAFTI@ntsb.gov.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an independent U.S. government investigative agency responsible for civil transportation accident investigation. The agency’s primary function is to investigate and report on aviation accidents and incidents, certain types of highway mishaps, ship and marine accidents, pipeline incidents, bridge failures, and railroad accidents. The NTSB is also tasked with investigating instances in which hazardous materials are released during transport. The agency is based in Washington, D.C., and operates regional offices in: Anchorage, Alaska; Denver, Colorado; Ashburn, Virginia; and Seattle, Washington.
