Aero-News Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, gets the rundown on Fielden Aero at the 2021 DeLand Sport Aviation Showcase. Don Fielden, owner, brought his work-in-progress Aeropup USA from down under. The Australian kitplane is a rugged, two-place runabout meant for bounding through the harsh Australian outback.
A few tweaks and changes for his American demo plane include a 130 hp UL350iS engine with a variable pitch prop to make short work of the competition in STOL trials. The Aeropup sports webbed, triple-spar, folding wings for durability and convenience. The firewall-aft kit sells for $18,000 USD, and cost savings are available for extra accoutrements direct from Fielden. The ‘pup’ takes around 500 hours to build, with a total cost in the range of $45,000, making for an estimated hourly cost of $25 for a well-built plane.
What’s in the future? Tricycle gear, engine varieties, and more.
