Convicted Drunk Pilot Fights For Plane Proceeds

John Salamone Wants His Wife To Have The Money

Who should get the proceeds from the sale of John Salamone's Piper Cherokee?

That question was the subject of a special hearing last week, as Salamone's attorney tried to stop the state of Pennsylvania from taking the $34,000 aircraft away from Salamone.

Of course, he won't be needing it for some time. Salamone, 44, was convicted last month of reckless endangerment and risking a catastrophe after flying his Cherokee (file photo of type, above) through restricted Pennsylvania airspace while drunk. He's been sentenced to between six and 23 months in prison.

"Michelle Salamone is not responsible for her husband’s conduct," argued defense lawyer Joseph P. Green Jr. on Friday. "There is nothing right or fair in penalizing her."

But prosecutor James Staerk argued the state does have the right to take the aircraft without compensation, deeming it contraband related to criminal conduct.
