Nigerian Pilot Completes Solo Circumnavigation

Flight Part Of 'Project Transcend'

A 38-year-old Nigerian pilot has completed a solo circumnavigation of the Earth in a modified Cirrus SR22 airplane.

The pilot, Ademilola “Lola” Odujinrin (pictured), landed at Washington Dulles International Airport on March 29, completing the last leg of his journey. He began the circumnavigation attempt in June of 2016, and landed in 15 countries on five continents over the course if the past 10 months.

Odujinrin is no aviation beginner. He accumulated more than 4,000 hours flying 737s for Arik Air for five years, and now for Air Djibouti. He earned his private pilot certificate in 1999, according to a report from The Huffington Post. After taking a break from flying, he earned his ATP in 2011.

The flight was part of "Project Transcend", a foundation "powered by private sector professionals with the singular goal of inspiring Africa’s teeming population to visualise a world without borders, to dream without restraint, to strive to succeed beyond real or imagined limitations, to light up Africa on the global map of achievers and over-comers. It’s about putting African dreams and visions into action," according to its website.

Odujinrin's flight was the first solo circumnavigation of the Earth by an African, according to Project Transcend.
