Vacationers Find SpaceX Debris In The Bahamas

Pieces Of Falcon 9 Wash Up On Elbow Cay

A piece of a Falcon 9 rocket that was destroyed in April during an attempt to land on a floating barge was discovered by Kevin Eichlberger and his friends while on vacation in the Bahamas in late May.

Eichlberger said he spotted the large piece of debris floating between 100 and 200 yards from shore from the the steps of the beach house in which they were staying on Elbow Cay. After getting it to shore, it was quickly identified as a piece of a SpaceX Booster. Attached to the wreckage were two Go Pro cameras in housings, which Eichlberger and his friends removed from the debris and opened. They took the SD chips from the cameras, but did not find any usable data on them.

Weather.com reports Eichlberger  sent a tweet to Elon Musk saying he and his friends had found the debris. It took Musk a few days to reply, but he eventually thanked Eichlberger for letting him know about the discovery.

Eichlberger said jokingly that the barnacle-encrusted piece of the booster was too large and heavy to get back through customs to the U.S. ... so they left it on the beach.
