Pilot Involved In Non-Fatal Accident Being Drug Tested

Aerostar 602P Skidded Off A Runway, Damaged ILS

The pilot of an Aerostar 602P that skidded off a runway in Sandpoint Airport (KSZT) in Sandpoint, ID last Monday is being tested for possible drug use.

The pilot, Utah resident Donald Muirhead, 55, has been charged with flying an airplane under the influence of narcotics, according to a report in the Bonner County Daily Bee.

Last Monday, the Aerostar piloted by Muirhead skidded off the airport's only runway and went through a perimeter fence, damaging the airport's ILS system to the tune of about $400,000. Replacement of the system could take as long as seven months, according to airport manager Dave Schuck.

The Associated Press reports that damage to the airplane was estimated to be about $350,000.

Neither Muirhead nor his two passengers were injured in the accident.

Local officials say the damage to the ILS may adversely impact the local economy. The airport reportedly accounts for some $33 million in economic impact to the community.
