Fuel Mismanagement Forces Off-Airport Landing In Idaho

Airplane Landed On I-84 In Boise At Rush Hour

The pilot of a Cessna 210 made a gear-up landing on Interstate 84 about a mile from Gowen Field in Boise, ID on Tuesday. The FAA's preliminary incident report indicates there was substantial damage to the aircraft, but the pilot walked away.

According to Fox News, the incident occurred at about 0700 local time ... in the middle of the morning rush hour. According to the report, the pilot forgot to switch tanks and the engine experience fuel starvation with plenty of fuel on board.

Andy Patrick, the owner of Boise-based SP aircraft, told Fox News that the pilot "just made a mistake and forgot to switch fuel tanks. The pilot made an error and wasn't able to make it to the runway."

SP Aircraft is a charter business that offers freight hauling as well as back-country flight experiences. Patrick said that the airplane was carrying freight from Spokane, WA to Boise when the accident occurred.

The pilot did manage to miss all of the cars on the Interstate when he landed, but traffic backed up for miles.

Patrick would not identify the pilot, or the type of cargo on board to the media.
