Where Was The New Warning System?

ADIZ Violator Wasn't Flashed With New NORAD Lasers

When a Canadian pilot transgressed into the Washington ADIZ Monday, where were NORAD's highly-touted laser warning beacons?

They were never turned on, according to the military.

The Canadian Cessna 340 was flying from Knoxville, TN to Gaithersburg, MD when it was apparently struck by lightning, military officials said, knocking out its transponder and radios. The aircraft was flying IMC at the time.

"The lasers didn't sparkle for the same reason his radio and transponder went out —- the weather," First Lt. Lisa Citino, a Pentagon spokeswoman, told the Associated Press.

After controllers lost contact with the Canadian pilot, F-16s were scrambled to intercept. One fired a flare to get the pilot's attention. He was then escorted to Gaithersburg, MD, where he and his two passengers, a man and woman, were questioned for four hours before they were allowed to go.

No penalties will be sought against the pilot, according to a spokesman for the FAA.
