F-16 Pilot Safe After Bailout Near Florida Keys

Aircraft Based At Homestead

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 03.12.07 1300 EST: The pilot of an F-16 is safe after bailing out from his fighter during a Monday morning training mission off the Florida Keys, near Islamorada.

The unnamed Air Force Reserve pilot was rescued by a US Coast Guard helicopter shortly after the jet crashed into the water approximately 35 miles east of Marathon, FL, said Homestead Air Reserve Base chief of public affairs Lt. Col. Tom Davis to The Associated Press. The fighter was one of two operating in the region.

Officials said the accident was caused by a malfunction, but did not elaborate. Efforts are now underway to salvage the aircraft, which investigators hope will provide more clues as to what went wrong.

The F-16 is one of 17 based at Homestead, flying for the 93rd Fighter Squadron, according to the AP.
